What is Unix Epoch Time?

Unix time is a system for tracking points in time. It measures the total number of **seconds** elapsed since the **Unix Epoch** (January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC), not counting leap seconds. It is widely used in systems, log files, database indices, and JWT configurations.

Why 1970-01-01?

The epoch date was arbitrarily selected around the birth of Unix operating system development in the late 1960s/early 1970s. System creators decided 1970 was a clean, round threshold to assign value `0` for system tick starts.

Seconds vs Milliseconds

Standard Unix timestamps use **seconds** (10 digits). However, many modern programming environments like JavaScript (NodeJS, browser engines) use **milliseconds** (13 digits) to support sub-second timing. Keep an eye on value lengths when parsing parameters!

The Year 2038 Problem (Y2K38)

Older 32-bit systems store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer. The maximum value for this storage is **2147483647** (which maps to **January 19, 2038, 03:14:07 UTC**). At this point, integers will overflow into negative values, crashing unpatched systems. 64-bit systems resolve this.
